Margrethe Schanne Biography

Notable: Born 1921; Royal Danish Ballet

Margrethe Schanne was born in Copenhagen in 1921. She studied at the Royal Danish Ballet School with Harald Lander and later in London and Paris with Kniaseff and Egorova. She danced with the Royal Danish Ballet from 1940 to 1966. A great interpreter of the Romantic repertoire. Her best roles were in La Sylphide (which she danced over 100 times) and Giselle.

She guested with Petit’s Ballet des Champs-Elysées in 1947 and Grand Ballet du Marquis de Cuevas in 1956. During the 50’s and 60’s she also toured extensively in the United States, South Africa and Europe. She left the stage in 1966 to become a teacher.
