Yuan Yuan Tan was born in China in 1974. From the age of 11 she studied at the Shanghai Dancing School. At 17 she left Shanghai for Europe to study in Stuttgart. She joined the San Fransisco Ballet in 1995 as a soloist. In 1997 she was promoted to principal dancer.
