Yulia Makhalina was born in St Petersburg in 1968. She graduated from Vaganova Ballet Academy (class of Prof. Marina Vasilyeva). Joined Mariinsky Theatre in 1985. Became Principal in 1989. She has appeared throughout the world as a guest artist and toured with the Kirov Ballet.
