Alicia Markova Biography

Notable: 1910 -2004; Ballets Russes, Royal Ballet

Alicia Markova was born in London 1910. Her original name was Lilian Alicia Marks. Studied with Astafieva in London and joined Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes when she was only 14 years old. Danced with the Vic-Wells Ballet (now the Royal Ballet) 1931-35, becoming its first prima ballerina in 1933. She was the first British ballerina to dance Giselle and Odette-Odile. In 1935 she formed a company with Anton Dolin. Joined Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo 1938-41 and American Ballet Theatre 1941-46. With Anton Dolin she toured worldwide. Returned to the Royal Ballet as guest in 1948 where she danced her first full-lenght Sleeping Beauty.

She retired in 1963.
